This is an article I had originally written in the fall of 2005 right after Steve Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It ran in Slippy Magazine the next week.

Would you look at this guy. His hair prim. Proper. Making clever quips to the audience. They’re only laughing out of respect. They’re really only here for one reason: me.

He’s got about as much enthusiasm in this speech he did when he was hawking Isotoner gloves.

Don’t think I didn’t see you rehearsing while I was giving my speech, Dan, ‘cause I did.

What would this guy do if he didn’t have his “golden arm”? He wouldn’t be a second-rate broadcaster like he is now, that’s for sure. Me? I’m a freakin’ lawyer! I got a freakin law degree when I was playing. What did he do? Sell gloves? Please.

Why did I even agree to this? I’m so much better than that guy. It’s not even funny. What if I just take my ring here… and turn it just so… Bam! How’s that sun in your eye Danny Boy, heh heh… Oh! He’s looking. Hey buddy. Sorry, just, uh, blowing on my ring here. My diamond-encrusted Super Bowl Ring here. Sorry. Just, uh, polishing it on my lapel. Great speech, man. Yeah, thumbs up, bro. What did I say? Oh yeah, I said “No one can ever takes this away from us… Ever! … Ever!” Gives me chills right now. I mean, it was only like the most played clip on SportsCenter for like the next year. I still see that clip sometimes. What’s his most played clip? That fake spike he did against the Jets that time? Big friggin’ deal. Bottom line, put it to a poll, my 6 touchdown passes against the Chargers in the Super Bowl would totally beat out any personal record he has. And he already has Manning up his ass. I mean, the guy already broke one of Dan’s meaningless records. When is someone gonna throw 7 touchdown passes in a Super Bowl? Probably never.

Why can’t the guys who kidnapped him in “Ace Ventura” do it right… about… now. Damn. Why does crap like that only happen in movies? And so what anyway if he was in a movie. He played himself. He stunk. And the movie isn’t even funny anymore. It doesn’t hold up. Just like Dan’s records aren’t gonna either. I had six TDs in a Super Bowl, man! Six!

Look at this crowd. They’re all so enamored by DAN. At least they don’t have to think when they listen to him. I totally busted out like 6 or 7 words that they are going to have to look up when they get home. Why? Because I’m good like that. Wait, what the fuck is this? Don’t tell me he’s gonna throw a pass to Clayton! Oh no, he definitely did it. What a ploy. If that old fart Rice would just hang ’em up, and stop acting out the glory days in Denver, I’d totally show these clowns up.

Thank Gawwwwwd he shut up. Now I just shake some hands, smile and nod my head, and I’ll be bangin a cocktail waitress by 10. Wonder if its open bar. Gotta be right?

Maybe thinking the Secret Service could get in front of the first shoe is a little unreasonable. But, I think expecting them to at least get a hand on the second shoe is perfectly within reason.
I think Muntadar al-Zaidi would have been more effective if he was quicker with the second shoe. You gotta anticipate W. getting out of the way of the first one. So I think a second, immediate shoe throw would have met its target.

Then again, I guess I gotta respect the stones he had to throw the intial one.

De La Hoya vs Pacquiao

Yeah, yeah, I know the fight was last Saturday—I had my birthday party and I’m too cheap to buy a PPV fight, let it go—but I finally caught the replay of De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao fought on December 6th. What a show Pacman put on! My Lord. The guy landed two jabs, ducked, danced and landed another jab in a quicker amount of time than it takes me to get my keys out of pocket. De La Hoya had no shot in this one. Pacman literally beat him into retirement.

Pacman looks like he’ll fight Hatton next, who I think he’ll beat with ease. After that, here’s to the awesomeness that would be a bout between my two favorite fighters right now, Pacman and Mayweather. It will probably never happen, but a brother can dream.
